Apple Teams Up with OpenAI to Bring ChatGPT to Siri

Apple has formed an exciting partnership with OpenAI. This collaboration will integrate ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot, into Apple’s digital assistant Siri. The tech giant made this groundbreaking announcement during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote on Monday.

Users will be able to access ChatGPT for free through Siri in the upcoming iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia operating systems later this year. No account or login will be required. Apple has reassured users that their queries to ChatGPT will not be logged or stored, ensuring privacy.

In addition to the free ChatGPT access, the AI assistant will be deeply integrated into Apple’s system-wide writing tools. This will allow users to leverage ChatGPT’s capabilities for various writing tasks across Apple’s ecosystem.

Those who subscribe to ChatGPT’s premium tier will also enjoy an enhanced experience. They can link their paid OpenAI accounts to access premium ChatGPT features directly within Apple’s operating systems.

The partnership works by having Siri first ask the user’s permission before sending any questions, documents or photos to ChatGPT. Once approved, Siri will then present ChatGPT’s response directly to the user.

Apple has been actively seeking to incorporate advanced AI features to stay competitive with other major tech companies. Discussions were held with both Google and OpenAI to potentially integrate their AI technologies. Ultimately, OpenAI secured the deal with Apple.

OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman expressed excitement about the partnership, stating it aligns with their mission to make cutting-edge AI accessible to everyone. He highlighted Apple’s commitment to safety and innovation as key factors behind the collaboration.

Speculation had arisen that OpenAI’s recent launch of GPT-4o, featuring a voice assistant reminiscent of Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal in “Her,” was a precursor to enhancing Siri. Apple has now confirmed that GPT-4o will indeed power ChatGPT within Apple devices running iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia.

Alongside the OpenAI partnership, Apple unveiled its own suite of new AI features branded as “Apple Intelligence” during the WWDC keynote. This demonstrates Apple’s comprehensive approach to integrating advanced AI capabilities across its product lineup.
