From Flyovers to EV Charging: Google Maps’ Game-Changing Features in India

Google Maps is rolling out exciting new features for users in India. These updates aim to enhance the navigation experience and provide more convenience. Let’s explore the key additions that Google Maps is bringing to the table.

Flyover Guidance

One of the most requested features is finally here. Google Maps will now tell users if they should take a flyover or the service road next to it. This feature will be available in 40 Indian cities for both four-wheeler and two-wheeler users. Android users will get this update first, with iOS and CarPlay users receiving it later.

EV Charging Locations

With the growing adoption of electric vehicles in India, Google Maps is stepping up. It plans to add over 8,000 EV charging locations across the country. This is made possible through partnerships with various EV charging providers and data aggregators. Users will be able to see detailed information about charging stations, including plug types and real-time availability. They can also filter locations based on charger type and find stations specifically for two-wheelers.

Metro Ticket Booking

Google Maps is introducing a metro ticket booking feature in Kochi and Chennai. This feature is developed in collaboration with ONDC and Namma Yatri. Users can book metro tickets directly through the app when planning their journey. Google plans to expand this feature to more cities and include other modes of public transport in the future.

Narrow Road Alerts

Four-wheeler drivers will benefit from narrow road alerts. This feature helps them avoid using narrow roads that might be difficult to navigate. Initially, this feature will be available in eight cities: Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Indore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, and Guwahati. Like the flyover guidance feature, it will first roll out on Android devices.

Additional Updates

Google Maps is also introducing faster reporting options for users to flag ongoing construction or traffic accidents. A new ‘Lists’ feature allows users to curate recommendations for various locations and experiences. These updates aim to make Google Maps more user-friendly and informative.

Google is also reducing prices for Indian developers who use its Maps API for their apps. This move comes shortly after Ola announced it would no longer use Google Maps API, opting for an in-house solution instead.
