Combating Online Misuse: WhatsApp Blocks Over 22 Million Accounts in India

Digital fraud prevention and online safety have emerged as top priorities for Indian IT companies. A formidable challenge is presented by the large volume of users and the development in sophisticated schemes. The immensely popular messaging service WhatsApp banned an astounding 22.31 million accounts in India alone in the first three months of 2024.

This enormous number of bans indicates an almost twofold increase in comparison to the same January–March period in 2023, highlighting the growing conflict against those attempting to use WhatsApp for illicit activities. The activities done and the laws that permit them are made clear in the company’s monthly transparency reports.

WhatsApp enforced these account restrictions in compliance with Indian IT rules and regulations, specifically focusing on sections related to intermediaries’ due diligence and adherence to ethical principles. The legal basis was specifically established by Rule 4(1)(d) and Rule 3A(7) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

Before any users complained, WhatsApp proactively identified and deactivated a large number of the problematic accounts. However, its systems also handled complaints that users reported as infractions. Furthermore, the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) prescribed specific prohibitions.

An analysis of the quarter’s data reveals a worrying trend of increasing abuse. 1.36 million of the 6.73 million accounts that were banned in January did so voluntarily. Of the 7.63 million suspensions in February, 1.42 million were proactive. Additionally, 7.95 million accounts were deleted in March, 1.43 million of which were deactivated beforehand.

Hate speech, harassment, fraud, and the spread of false information were the primary offences. All of them constituted egregious breaches of WhatsApp’s terms of service and platform policies, which are designed to protect users’ privacy and safety. India is the biggest market for WhatsApp globally, with over 530 million active users monthly, which makes it a tempting target for online fraudsters.

WhatsApp has asked users to familiarise themselves with the “Acceptable Use of Our Services” standards in order to tackle this issue head-on. It has also placed a strong emphasis on reporting unauthorised access attempts quickly and strengthening account security. Coordination between businesses, consumers, and authorities will be essential as digital platforms implement sophisticated detection systems and improve monitoring.

A Search Engine From OpenAI? What’s Their Edge Against Google?

The business that created the immensely successful ChatGPT, OpenAI, is reportedly introducing its own search product, which is going to cause quite a stir in the world of search engines. Although OpenAI has not disclosed any information regarding these intentions, reliable rumours from industry insiders indicate that an announcement may happen soon.

The first clue was provided by “X,” a well-known tech expert on Twitter. They said that OpenAI planned to have a demonstration event for new services on May 9. This intriguing event would coincide with Google’s annual I/O developer conference, which is the week before the search giant usually unveils its newest hardware and software breakthroughs.

A credible leaker going by the name “Jimmy Apples” added fuel to the fire by disclosing further information. Jimmy claims that since January, OpenAI has been aggressively building up its events team, which culminated in the hiring of a specialised events manager only last month. This increased emphasis on events suggests something significant is being prepared for a June debut.

The hints don’t end there, though. Jimmy also reported that since late April, over 50 new “async subdomains” had been formed on OpenAI’s backend, indicating a rush of activity. The introduction of new, resource-intensive goods and services frequently comes before this kind of infrastructure expansion.

So what may this OpenAI search engine that has the potential to be revolutionary look like? Although specifics are few, the general themes are consistent with remarks made earlier by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. He has stated that he would want to combine the skills of conventional online search with the strength of big language models such as ChatGPT.

Altman, meanwhile, insisted that no OpenAI product would merely imitate market leaders like Google. Rather, he sees a whole new paradigm that facilitates users’ ability to “find, act on, and synthesise information” in a more intelligent and productive manner.

The CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, has expressed a desire to fully incorporate OpenAI’s capabilities into the Bing search engine, which aligns with this audacious goal. The objective? to offer a respectable substitute for Google’s hegemonic control over search.

The impending release of an OpenAI search engine has the potential to drastically upend one of the internet’s most established and well-established industries, if the rumours are true. There would be significant ramifications for end consumers and businesses alike.

It would set up a high-stakes AI arms race among the internet titans as they intensify their efforts to create ever-more sophisticated language models and search functions. More significantly, though, it may radically rethink how we common humans interact with the enormous amount of information available online in our increasingly digitally enabled society.

Instagram Empowers Creators with Captivating Stories Updates

A number of cutting-edge innovations for Stories are being released by Instagram, offering users engaging new avenues for content sharing and engagement with their followers. Enhancing innovation, participation, and individual expression on the platform is the goal of these changes.

One of the most interesting additions is the “Reveal” feature. This enables you to offer an unclear story along with a suggestion that invites your followers to get in touch with you directly to view the concealed details. It’s an incredibly original way to grab people’s attention and strike up a discussion, and it’s really beneficial for artists who want to boost engagement.

When building a story, press the sticker symbol to access Reveal. Then, pick “Reveal” and enter your enigmatic hint. Popular accounts have the advantage of saving time as their followers may direct contact you to unblur the Story after it has been posted, saving you the time to approve each request one at a time.

The sticker that says “Add Yours Music” is another iconic introduction. With the help of this clever application, you may post a song that expresses your present state of mind and invite your followers to reply with their own musical recommendations. It expands on Instagram’s “Add Yours” sticker, which asks users to submit their own Stories in response to a challenge or subject.

Instagram has released “Frames,” a fun tool that turns your images into digital snapshots that seem like they were taken on a Polaroid camera. Shake your phone or press the “Shake to reveal” button to reveal the framed photo along with the original date and timestamp of the photo. You have the option to provide a customised caption that reminds you of the memory captured in the picture.

Instagram recently announced improvements to its algorithmic ranking system, with the goal of giving original content from smaller producers a higher priority than reposts and aggregated content. These adjustments coincide with that statement. The platform has promised to exclude content aggregators from recommendations completely, identify reposted material, and swap out reposts for original postings in recommendations.

This action is a reaction to growing complaints from authors who believed that the last version of the algorithm had harmed their reach. Instagram’s proactive approach is to foster a more genuine and fair content ecosystem by elevating a range of voices and rewarding creativity.

With these cutting-edge features and algorithmic changes, Instagram shows how dedicated it is to creating a vibrant, interesting, and creator-focused community. It is anticipated that users will enjoy experimenting with these new resources, letting their imaginations run wild, and developing closer relationships with the dynamic Instagram community.

Meta Upgrades WhatsApp Communities: Events and Announcement Replies Arrive

With the recent significant update to WhatsApp Communities, it’s now much simpler to maintain organisation and participation in your groups. Two fantastic new tools that Meta has released will expedite event preparation and enhance admin-member communication. Now let’s go specific.

First off, event creation is now possible for group organisers from within their WhatsApp Communities. Whether you’re organising an in-person meeting, a virtual event, or anything in between, this useful tool allows you to compile all the pertinent information in one easy-to-find location.

Any member of the group may easily create an event with only a few touches. Enter the name of the event, the time, date, and any other pertinent information you would like to share. Then, other participants may simply RSVP using the app, ensuring that you always have a precise headcount.

But it’s the execution that’s truly brilliant. Attendees may easily access event information at any time by visiting the group’s information page. In addition, members will receive ping reminders as the event approaches, guaranteeing that nobody forgets.

Event creation is now only available in Community groups, but in the upcoming months, Meta intends to expand its availability to all WhatsApp groups. Prepare to bid a fond farewell to disorganised event information and forgotten RSVPs!

In specialised Announcement Groups, community members may now immediately respond to admin announcements thanks to the second major upgrade. Because of the increased participation, administrators are better able to get opinions, start conversations, and inform everyone about significant changes or choices.

Reactions are minimised and carefully put together to maintain organisation, providing obvious context without overcrowding the primary discourse. Additionally, reply notifications are muted by default to prevent notification overload, which helps Announcement Groups keep focused while still allowing for meaningful back-and-forth.

CEO of Meta Mark Zuckerberg claims that these developments expand upon the strong framework WhatsApp Communities established at its introduction in November of last year. Communities, which can accommodate up to 100 groups under one roof, making it simpler than ever to divide up communication while maintaining centralization.

According to Zuckerberg, “If you’re in a WhatsApp Community, you can now create events in your groups and reply to admin announcements.” And Meta has many more updates in store for Communities and groups in the months to come. This is only the beginning.

Hence, whether you belong to a community that is focused on work, service, hobbies, or any other shared interest, these new technologies are prepared to up your organisational game. Stay tuned as the future of efficient group communication is just getting started!

WhatsApp Targets Scammers and Spammers with Upcoming Account Limiting Function

Messaging services like WhatsApp are proactively enhancing user safety and curbing misuse as online frauds and fraudulent activities continue to proliferate. One such step that is allegedly in the works is the addition of a new function to WhatsApp that would enable it to temporarily block accounts that behave suspiciously.

According to reports from WaBetaInfo, a trusted source tracking WhatsApp updates, the messaging giant is testing an “account limiting” function. If a user account is identified for potentially harmful conduct or for breaking the terms of service of the platform, WhatsApp will be able to temporarily restrict them from starting new chats or discussions.

This action is justified by the need to address abusive behaviour, spam, and other infractions without using permanent account bans, which have the potential to seriously impair user experience. WhatsApp hopes that by imposing temporary limitations, users will be forewarned and given the chance to make necessary corrections before resorting to more severe measures.

So how does WhatsApp spot possibly harmful behaviour? The software analyses information and behavioural patterns using automated algorithms and machine learning models without jeopardising end-to-end encryption. Red flags include unusually high message frequency, automated scripts, and other signs of questionable behaviour that these systems search for.

With the account limiting feature, users flagged by these algorithms would face temporary restrictions on initiating new chats. However, they would still be able to send and receive messages within their existing group conversations and individual chats, ensuring that essential communication channels remain open.

This strategy may be especially useful in the fight against con artists and scammers who frequently use WhatsApp to connect with possible victims. WhatsApp may interfere with their activities and force them to reevaluate their strategies before imposing permanent bans by temporarily restricting their capacity to start new discussions.

It’s important to note that while WaBetaInfo is a reliable source for WhatsApp updates, the company has not officially announced or confirmed the account limiting feature. Additionally, details on the specific criteria for triggering these restrictions and the duration of the limitations remain unclear.

WhatsApp and other messaging services need to update their security protocols to keep up with the constant evolution of internet dangers.

Google Play Store Rolls Out Multi-App Download

Google Play Store, the software store for Android devices, has seen a significant transformation lately, gaining an abundance of new features and functionalities. One of the newest additions to the platform is the ability to download many apps at once, which should simplify the app installation process for users.

The Play Store could only download one app at a time in the past, so users had to wait patiently for each installation to finish before starting the next. This restriction sometimes caused frustration, especially for individuals who were eager to experiment and download several new games or apps at once. But Google realised that a more effective and user-friendly method was required, which is why the multi-app download functionality was created.

With the release of this feature, the Play Store has significantly changed from its prior behaviour, providing customers with a more easy and smooth app acquisition experience. Android users may now start installing numerous applications or games at once, saving time and simplifying the process, by downloading multiple apps simultaneously.

After being made public via leaks and reports, the multi-app download capability is now being made available to a larger global user base as part of a wider rollout. Even while the present implementation only allows for the simultaneous download of two applications at a time and queues up additional pending downloads until the first two are finished, this is still a significant improvement over the single-download limitation that existed previously.

It’s important to remember that this function is still in its early phases and that more improvements are anticipated. According to early rumours, Google could ultimately raise the cap, presumably letting users select how many applications they want to download at once at a time—up to a maximum of five.

Although the option to download several apps at once is limited to installing new apps, it is expected that Google will eventually expand this feature to include app updates as well. The Play Store would be even more efficient and convenient if simultaneous updates were allowed, allowing consumers to upgrade their apps with the least amount of interruption.

As part of its continuous efforts to improve and optimise the Play Store experience, Google has introduced the ability to download several apps at once. With the implementation of desired functionality and the resolution of frequent user pain points, Google hopes to further establish the Play Store as an efficient and user-friendly app store for Android users globally.

Sundar Pichai’s Billion-Dollar Vision: YouTube, Cloud to Drive Alphabet’s Future Growth

Tech giants like Google are constantly looking to explore new trajectories.Alphabet’s (Google’s parent company) most recent financial report has highlighted two such industries that are projected to generate substantial revenue in the years to come.

During the quarterly financial report briefing on April 25, 2024, the chief executive of Google, Sundar Pichai, unveiled a monumental revelation: the tech giant anticipates that by the culmination of 2024, its YouTube video-sharing platform and cloud computing branch would collectively amass revenue exceeding $100 billion. Pichai conveyed his elation at this remarkable feat, stating that it exemplifies Google’s aptitude in discerning and nurturing fledgling enterprises, accentuating the corporation’s “proven history of investing in and cultivating prosperous, novel, burgeoning businesses.”

Alphabet announced its first-ever dividend of 20 cents per share and reiterated plans to repurchase an additional $70 billion in stock, two significant statements that showed the company’s confidence in its future growth potential.

Alphabet’s performance was further aided by YouTube, the video-sharing network, which in the first quarter of 2024 generated record-breaking $8.1 billion in ad sales—a phenomenal 21% rise over the same period the previous year. Google’s revenue from a combination of devices, platform and subscriptions clocked $8.7 billion for the quarter, almost a 18% increase year-on-year.

Services like YouTube TV and YouTube Premium are included in this revenue. Though he did not give specific figures, Philipp Schindler, Alphabet’s chief business officer, attributed this revenue rise to the growing number of YouTube users. Pichai did, however, state in January that $15 billion was anticipated to be made by the subscription business by 2023.

Google unveiled the Google One AI Premium Plan in February, combining a number of cutting-edge generative AI technologies into a single new subscription service, in an effort to better capitalise on the growing AI market. This package, which costs Rs 1,950 per month in India, gives users access to an advanced version of Google’s chatbot Gemini, called Gemini Advanced. Gemini Advanced is built to handle complicated tasks and is driven by the AI model Gemini Ultra 1.0. Users of Gemini can also take advantage of its features in Alphabet’s productivity package, which includes Meet, Gmail, Docs, Slides, and Sheets.

Through a number of efforts, Google has been actively targeting subscription growth. YouTube began a global campaign to combat ad blockers in October 2023, eventually expanding it to include third-party apps. In June 2021, Google Photos discontinued its free unlimited storage, which increased the number of people who subscribed.

Pichai emphasised the variety of Alphabet’s revenue streams by citing the strong performance of YouTube, Google Cloud, and the search division for the company’s total revenue rise during the quarter.

In light of the fact that digital behemoths are constantly pushing the envelope of what is feasible, Alphabet’s most recent earnings report shows the company’s ability to identify and seize new opportunities, notably in the areas of cloud computing and video streaming. Google’s innovative products and commitment to subscription-based business models position the company for long-term growth and success in the quickly evolving digital market.

Encryption Showdown: WhatsApp Risks Leaving India to Protect User Privacy

WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted which keeps its users secure but the messaging app warns that it will stop its services in India if it is forced to break chat encryption in the near future. WhatsApp informed this to the Delhi High Court this week, where it is facing a big battle to keep its users secure behind its vaunted end-to-end encryption for chats, calls, videos and more.

The Meta-owned platform has appointed Tejas Karia, who shared the company’s opinion on breaking encryption and threatening to exit the country rather than comply with the laws on this matter. He also mentioned that WhatsApp is used by millions because they feel secure with the features offered by the platform. The messaging app is claimed to have around 400 million active users in the country where you also have the UPI payment feature.

The last thing Meta and WhatsApp would want is to stop its messaging service in the country and it will be quietly hoping that warnings like these would help its case and will not be forced to break its encryption for messages.

The Indian government has repeatedly claimed that WhatsApp and other messaging apps need to allow them to trace the messages under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021 which is not possible when the chats are secure behind encryption and the keys are not accessible to anyone, including WhatsApp.

The Meta-owned platform is challenging its case against the IT Rules and argued that breaking encryption violates the privacy of users under the Indian Constitution. The government feels that privacy rights are not absolute and wants to have a balance, which includes breaking encryption for chats.

WhatsApp has faced similar demands in other countries but continues to abide by its policies and belief that messages in all forms should and will be secure for a long time. After all, security is one of the biggest reasons why WhatsApp became so popular and got Meta to buy it for over $15 billion more than a decade ago.

Microsoft’s new AI model VASA-1 can make pictures ‘talk’

Microsoft introduces VASA -1, an AI model that can generate a video from photo. With the help of this tool you can give expressions to the picture in the video.

The software giant has unveiled a new artificial intelligence model that can generate videos of talking human faces by combining an audio clip and a still image.

Microsoft spokesperson said, “VASA-1 can generate realistic videos of people talking, at a resolution of 512×512 pixels and up to 40 frames per second. It paves the way for real-time engagements with lifelike avatars that emulate human conversational behaviors”

What is VASA-1 AI Video Generator?

Visual Affective Skill Audio or VASA-1 is a top end model of Microsoft, which can create the facial expressions of humans in the best possible way. The tool can generate all the kinds of feelings and emotions from photos on people’s faces.

In a nutshell, the tool can create video with different expressions of that person from a simple photograph. It creates videos with the help of face muscles, lips, nose, head tilt, and other factors.

How the new AI model VASA-1 creates videos from photos

As per Microsoft, VASA-1 uses a user provided photo and an audio clip to create a short video. It is claimed to handle artistic photos, singing audios and Non-English speech. Microsoft said, “It can handle arbitrary length audio and stably output seamless talking face videos”.

The AI model is capable of producing precious lip-audio synchronization as well as generating a wide spectrum of expressive facial nuances and natural head motions.

To add realism into the video, the model accepts optional signals as conditions, like eye gaze direction (forward- facing, leftwards, rightwards and upwards), head distance (close-up, extreme close-up) and emotion offsets (neutral, happiness, anger and surprise).

Microsoft claims that this AI tool can create videos like real life. That means with its help you can give expressions like real life. The company has shown VASA-1 as research demonstration. They have made it clear that there are no plans to release this product or release its API.

Microsoft will not release this product as there is high possibility of it been misused. The tool is similar to OpenAI’s Sora. Both the tools generate realistic videos. Sora creates complex videos from backgrounds and artifacts. VASA-1 is on human expression. Both these tools are not yet available in public domain.

How Many Employees Did Google Really Fire? The Truth Will Shock You

The controversy surrounding Google’s cloud computing contract with the Israeli government has taken a dramatic turn, leading to a wave of employee terminations. Last week, Google workers staged sit-in protests at the company’s offices in New York and Sunnyvale, California, expressing their opposition to the tech giant’s collaboration with Israel amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The protests were organized by a group called “No Tech for Apartheid,” which claims that Google’s partnership with the Israeli government indirectly contributes to the oppression of Palestinians. The group argues that by providing cloud services to Israel, Google is enabling the Israeli military’s surveillance and data collection capabilities, which could be used to target civilians in Gaza.

In response to the protests, Google initially terminated 30 employees who were deemed to be directly involved in the disruptive demonstrations. However, the situation escalated further when the company fired an additional 20 workers, bringing the total number of terminations to 50.

According to the organizers of the protest, some of the workers who were terminated were merely bystanders and did not actively participate in the sit-ins. The group condemned Google’s actions as “an aggressive and desperate act of retaliation” against employees who exercised their right to peaceful protest.

Google, on the other hand, maintains that every employee who was terminated was “personally and definitively involved in disruptive activity inside our buildings.” The company claims to have conducted a thorough investigation and carefully confirmed the involvement of each terminated employee.

The controversy has sparked a heated debate about the balance between employee activism and workplace conduct. While Google acknowledges the right of its employees to express their views, the company has drawn a line at disruptive behavior that interferes with the normal operations of the business.

In a company-wide memo, Google CEO Sundar Pichai urged employees to keep “politics” out of the workplace, emphasizing that Google is a business, not a platform for political debates or disruptive actions.

The “No Tech for Apartheid” group, however, remains undeterred. They have vowed to continue their workplace activism, sending a message to Google’s executives that they “will not stop fighting, and we will not back down.”

As the conflict between Google and its employees intensifies, the broader implications of the controversy extend beyond the tech industry. The ongoing civilian casualties in Gaza have deeply divided public opinion, fueling protests across corporate America and college campuses against business and government support for Israel.

The situation at Google highlights the complex challenges that companies face when navigating politically charged issues while maintaining a productive and functional workplace. As employee activism continues to gain momentum, businesses may need to reevaluate their policies and find a delicate balance between upholding free speech and ensuring operational continuity.
