Breaking News: Microsoft Drops Teams from Subscription Packages – Are You Affected?

Microsoft has recently implemented adjustments to its subscription services, Microsoft 365 and Office 365, in response to regulatory pressures from the European Union and complaints from competitors such as Slack. These changes involve the exclusion of the business collaboration tool, Teams, from certain subscription packages.

In the preceding year, Microsoft consented to selling Office 365 without Teams in the EU and Switzerland, a move prompted by concerns raised by the European Commission. The rationale behind this decision, as articulated by Microsoft, is to offer customers greater clarity and simplify decision-making processes regarding their subscription choices. Teams was initially introduced in 2016 as a complementary tool to the Office 365 suite and has since garnered an impressive user base of over 320 million worldwide.

For customers outside the EU and Switzerland, Microsoft has introduced a new standalone Teams offering tailored specifically for enterprise users. While businesses have always had the option to pay separately for Teams, it was previously bundled with Office 365, a practice that drew criticism from competitors who viewed Microsoft’s bundling strategies as anticompetitive.

Among these competitors, Slack, now under the ownership of Salesforce, has been particularly vocal, labeling Microsoft’s bundling practices as “illegal.” Slack’s contention is that Microsoft effectively coerced customers into adopting Teams by integrating it into its dominant Office 365 suite and obfuscating the true costs associated with the chat and video service.

In response to these criticisms, Microsoft’s recent announcement does not directly address the allegations but instead focuses on providing greater flexibility to its existing customers. Customers are now empowered to choose whether to maintain their current bundled package, update it, or opt for a new offering that better aligns with their needs.

For new customers, Microsoft has introduced standalone pricing for Teams, starting at $5.25 per user per month. Additionally, Office packages without Teams are now available at prices ranging from $7.75 to $54.75 per user per month, depending on the specific package and features included.

These adjustments are aimed at offering greater transparency and flexibility to customers while simultaneously addressing regulatory concerns and competition issues. By unbundling Teams from its subscription packages, Microsoft seeks to provide customers with clearer pricing structures and more freedom of choice in selecting the tools and services that best suit their requirements.

In summary, Microsoft’s recent changes to its subscription services reflect a concerted effort to navigate regulatory challenges and respond to criticisms from competitors. By offering standalone pricing for Teams and unbundling it from its subscription packages, Microsoft aims to foster a more competitive and transparent marketplace while continuing to meet the evolving needs of its diverse customer base.
