Google has a long list of webmaster guidelines and this list is established for plenty of reasons. For example- to make it very difficult for people to cheat in Search engine ranking pages (SERP’s), To the Internet more safer and to set standards across all the sites that are very easy to adhere to. To follow these Google Webmaster Guidelines is very essential particularly if you want to rank on Google and get huge traffic for your content.
John Mueller, Senior Webmaster Trends Analyst Google at least twice last week had to respond on social networking site Twitter suggesting that Search engine optimization professionals do not break the rules, but go against the Google webmaster guidelines just because other SEO’s are getting away with it. The Senior Google Webmaster Analyst also said it two different ways to two different people this week:
So you’re saying you’d recommend your clients to break the guidelines too, if they were to seek your legal advice? “Others are speeding and getting away with it, maybe you should give speeding a try too.”

Just because someone is doing something against webmaster guidelines of Google and they rank well in Google doesn’t mean what they are doing is helping them ranking good on Google. So, no need to copy their bad SEO practices when you know better.
