Fed Up with Politics on Social Media? Meta has something for you!

Meta, the Silicon Valley giant previously identified as Facebook, is orchestrating a seismic shift in its handling of political content across its sprawling platforms, Instagram and Threads. The architect behind this transformative move, Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s helmsman, dropped this bombshell bomb via a Threads post last Friday, unveiling a strategic pivot: Meta will no longer wield its considerable influence to thrust political content into the spotlight as aggressively as before.

Mosseri took pains to clarify the essence of this paradigm shift. While political posts from your favorite accounts will still grace your feed, Meta is dialing down its active promotion of such content. This shift, expected to take hold “in the next few weeks,” promises to recalibrate your encounters with political discourse on public accounts. Platforms like Instagram’s Reels and Explore, as well as Threads’ roster of suggested users, are in for a makeover where political content will take a backseat in the realm of proactive recommendations.

“In the next few weeks, we will be refining our methods to sidestep recommending political content on surfaces like Explore, Reels, and Suggested Users across both Instagram and Threads,” divulged Mosseri.

To cater to users still yearning for their political fix, Meta has unveiled a slick new control feature. Simply navigate to the Suggested content tab, and presto! You’ll find the Political content toggle. From there, users can toggle between ‘Don’t Limit’ or ‘Limit’ options based on their personal preference for political engagement.

This control feature is slated to debut on Facebook in due course, as Meta has confirmed.

But hold onto your hats! Meta has more in store. The tech titan has lifted the veil on a nifty feature tailor-made for Professional accounts on Instagram. These astute users now wield the power to monitor their eligibility for content recommendation based on recent forays into political discourse. Armed with the Account Status feature, these users can scrutinize and fine-tune recent posts, challenge Meta’s determinations if they so choose, or opt for a hiatus from political content to reclaim their recommendation eligibility.

Thus unfolds Meta’s grand design in the arena of political content—a landscape where users are bestowed with greater autonomy over their content consumption experience. Brace yourselves for a fresh chapter in the saga of social media—a chapter penned by Meta, promising a more bespoke, user-centric journey through the ever-evolving digital realm.
