Truecaller, the popular caller ID app, has unveiled its web version, bringing a host of features to the desktop for Android users in India. Aptly named Truecaller for Web, this new offering aims to enhance the user experience by providing seamless access to SMS and chat mirroring, call notifications, and number search functionality, all from the convenience of a computer.
The web version is initially available only to Android users in India, but Truecaller has plans to extend its reach to other markets in the future. To access Truecaller for Web, users simply need to link their Android devices to the web client through a QR code. This process is similar to linking the web versions of popular messaging apps like WhatsApp or Telegram.
One noteworthy aspect of Truecaller for Web is the company’s approach to ensuring security and privacy. Currently, users are limited to one active web session at a time, and the system automatically signs out users after 30 days of inactivity. However, users can manually de-link a browser from the settings if desired.
While Truecaller may be late to the game in offering SMS and chat mirroring, this feature can prove highly convenient for users. Imagine being able to quickly reply to a text or access one-time passwords (OTPs) for login directly from your desktop. Additionally, Microsoft’s Phone Link functionality already provides SMS mirroring for both Android and iPhone users on Windows.
Truecaller’s web client also introduces a notable improvement to the number search functionality. While the website previously imposed rate limits on number lookups, users can now search for numbers without any such limitations on the web client. Furthermore, the web client displays real-time caller ID notifications when a user receives a call, enhancing the overall user experience.
According to Truecaller, a staggering 80 million users receive SMS pop-up summary notifications daily. However, it’s unclear whether these users actively use Truecaller as their primary SMS client or have simply not denied the app permission to read SMS.
In recent months, Truecaller has focused on introducing more AI-powered features to its platform. Last month, the company launched the “Max” feature update for Android users, enabling them to block all calls from unapproved contacts or spam detected by AI. Additionally, in February, Truecaller brought call recording and AI-powered transcription features to India, following their initial launch in the US last year.
With the introduction of Truecaller for Web, the company aims to provide a seamless experience across devices, leveraging the power of AI and adapting to user needs in an ever-evolving technological landscape.
